my personal deal with tijs is that hes good, but not as good as everyone (especially europe) makes him out to be. hes not god, but all the dance music n00bs bow at his feet when they hear "love comes again" or "adagio for strings". w/e, hes just a dj.

Tijs Verwest is more than "just a DJ". When you label an artist like him with the word "JUST", you are erasing any talent they have. You overlook all the hard work they did to create something and bypass any passion they put into everything. Tiesto is not only a DJ but he's also an acclaimed producer. Do a simple internet search and find out more information before judging him.

I find it extremely frustrating that most people would rather pass judgement before educating themselves on a subject. When it comes to people, it is never good to judge a book by its cover. Here's an example: I once was acquainted with this guy who was a special forces soldier, a vice-squad police officer and proficient in several disciplines of martial arts. Basically, a man's man. Tough, macho, a guy you don't fuck with. Well, he was normally a well-reserved, mannerful person. That was until I saw him take out 5 skinheads/aryans who were starting to riot at a punk rock concert we attended. He did it all barehanded. What was truly surprising was to find out some weeks later that he was actually gay. Whoa! Not exactly the type of demeanor you label someone being gay, huh?

And the whole concept of an artist being "mainstream" or a sell-out is overused and highly misunderstood. A sell-out is an artist who goes against what they preached (le.g. ike a rap artist saying "fuck the police" yet they insist on having police escorts during a show or the rock group Fugazi signing with Sony although they claim to being against major labels). As for being mainstrean, I doubt ANY artist wants to be little-known, given little-to-no respect and make little-to-no money. Even artists who do it for the love of the art STILL need to put food on the table.

hehe, as much as I like to stay away from the highly debated Trance DJ's topic.....I still got love for the scene.

So here's my quick take, as of current:

Tiesto: predictable sets....can be boring, lost creativeness, and too commercial.
Summary: he may have publicity masses, but he's becoming dull. There's so many no-name DJs on compilation trance cds with songs just as good if not better than Tiesto.

Armin: still fresh and creative.
Summary: works hard, plenty of comp./remix releases, staying competitive.

Ferry Corsten: same as Armin.
Summary: his music is club/radio friendly, works in various projects with notable success.

Of course, PVD & ATB are not to be missed; especially ATB.

well, i no longer spin trance and actually refrain from attending trance oriented events. i've focused on minimal, tech & electro (with progressive, tribal & funky every so often) and it seems to be opening up doors for me (in europe, of course).

I have to agree that Tiesto is getting a little mainstream only because the fake fans are loving his music because its cool. I just recently saw him 2x at Crobar in NYC and he didint seem to feel the music Friday night which was 18+ but Saturday night just seemed amazing. And I am going to have to say because there were true Tiesto fans there and not wannabe fans.

Fake fans? I assume by this, you mean people who like some of the music, but aren't "die-hard" dance / trance / techno fans? I don't see how there can be "fake fans" if the person truly enjoys some or all of a person or group's music. There is no requirement to enjoy EVERY piece of material in order to be a fan.

Musicians and artists are going to switch things up here and there...Maybe in one area, the first night's set got a better response...it really doesn't mean anything other than people have different tastes in music.

truer words can't be said. music will be different for each listener just like any piece of art. everyone will have a different point of view, different emotions evoked, etc...

@ the mod.
armin is amazing recently. he has a lot of great new stuff. powerful shit and in my opinion and great on the ears. sail, control freak, etc. amazing tracks.

i also don't think tiesto is that great. pretty much as someone said earlier. the noobs come into this music and hear tiesto then pop a boner for no reason saying he's the best ever.

years after years of listening to this stuff.....we know our sh!t...hehe. Although, I've been falling behind with new trance releases lately.....spendin most of my time trying to keep up with the euro.

I've never really cared much for the "best DJ" vote. Several years ago, Oakenfold was on the top of the list. I did like a lot of his sets during that time, but there was a lot of material I didn't care for just the same. For me, there are sounds I like at certain times, depending upon the mood, and that's what I go with for the moment...but it isn't often, that I get a CD from anyone and enjoy everything on it.

Oakenfold's work has impressed me less as time has passed, and other people have stepped up with songs I've really liked, but I still wouldn't vote them as the "best ever" or even the "best now".

More impressive to me is the fact, that with all the BS that goes on in the world, Oakenfold, Tiësto, van Dyk, etc., can manage to travel to just about anywhere you can name, play for a few hours and draw huge crowds of people, and for that time, all is well.

...as for the fake fans...

If someone really likes the music, or some portion of the music, I'd say they're legit fans. There's always going to be that guy / girl who listens to Britney Spears at home, but dresses up like and swears to know everything there is to know about Marilyn Manson in public...They just can't seem to help it...
