I bought the last 4 issues of Umbrella Academy at Hot Topic, but haven’t read them yet because I can’t seem to get my hands on the first two...before I buy them though, I’d like some feedback on whether or not it’s any good...I’ll read it either way, I’d just like to hear from people who’ve read it

I really like Umbrella, it has a lot of great plot and storyline coupled with plenty of action and better ye, the action is easy enough to follow and not blow-it-up-cause-we-can *ahemTRANSFROMERScough*
The charachters to me seemed a bit undeveloped, time skips leave blank spaces in where and what the charachters were while trying to fill in these blanks with what little info we can get in the beginning of the books
Overall: Great. Awesome. I’d get the first two issues which mention them as kids and then adults and see how you like it

the umbrella academy deff rocks. maybe i love it because i have had to deal with resentment and chaotic happenings of a disfunctional family, just trying to exist and make things a little bit better for us all.. this is a comic i’d die to work on.

Probably one of the most unique stories I’ve ever read. It’s hard not to enjoy it, especially if you’ve already fallen for Gerard’s work in other medias.

The Umbrella Academy is an wonderful book on so many levels. The story is amazing. The Hellboy-esque art is amazing. The humor is clever and always worth a giggle. But, in my opinion, the best thing about this book is that it is bringing those who wouldn’t normally read comics into the comic world. Between great comic based movies (Inc. Hulk, Iron Man, Hellboy, Sin City) and great comics garnering mainstream success this is quickly becoming the new golden age of comics! Woo!

i disagree. i found the writing immature and the prose stilted. Loved the artwork tho. I realise i will be attacked by many fans of Way who would buy a handprint if it was his. But i was disappointed, and even read it through again to see if i could be kinder about it, but alas no. Only mildly humourous, maybe it was meant purely for adolescents. I adore Dark Horse and worship Joss Whedon, (real humour, lol stuff) but this one i could quite happily forget. Or i could if it wasn’t so heavily endorsed along with overpriced tatty merchandise (hmm remind anyone of a certain band?).And before any of the MCRmy start on me I have seen em 5 times and its always a good night out

To me it seems that comic book fans hate it, but the Gerard obssessed love it.

its not fair to say that you’ll ONLY like this IF you are a Gerard fan, or MCR fan.
I must admit that I am both, altho not as Gerard obsessed, I may be MCR obsessed. It still isn’t fair to state such a thing as you did. Yes, the fans of Gerard and MCR alike support him/them in whatever they do.
But there are comic book fans that DO like this book, that do not like or have never heard MCR at all. Just because you personally or some friends don’t does not mean that that is completely the case.
The story is an aquired taste. You either like it or you don’t.
I like it, and not because I’m a fan of a band, but because it made me laugh, and I love the idea, the story intrigues me.

I find the above argument thought provoking. I thought that the concept and storyline were good, but it was purely the writing that lets it down. To say a story is an acquired taste is interesting. I buy comics (probably too many) to enjoy the stories and art work immediately, i shouldn’t have to work at acquiring a taste for it. Forgive me if i have missinterpretted the use of the above contributors use of acquired, (blame in on an English/American miscommunication). I just feel that there are soooo many good writers out there whose first published comics do not have so much publicity and immediate merchandise available. I know that i’m probably naive but that sort of injustice bugs me. My local comic shop had seen lots of new visitors due to TUA , but alas they have not on the whole ventured further into the amazing world of comics. Anyway i have rambled enough, IMHO Way should have drawn it and got a really good writer to script from his concept.

Hi i’ve read issues 1-6 and it’s amazing...This was my first comic that i myself purchased and i was very pleased with it...Gerard Way did a fantastic job writing the story and the pictures are amazing...To tell you the truth i’m a huge fan of My Chemical Romance and that was the reason I bought the first issue...As soon as i read it I was ready for the next issue.. the story tends to pull you in and make you beg for more.....

I think the above comments support my point. I agree its a good story but read a few more comics by other authors, there are some great writers out there who don’t have a big media machine behind them but their work is just as worthy, funnier and better written.

Its a fair story, Art is Fantastic. I love it because its kinda dark and Gloomy. While working at a Comic book store while this Series was still going on iv seen so many Random Girls coming in just to buy this book, Kinda made me laugh some as i knew the real reason why they were buying the book, all while i brag about me owning the Preview Issue from Free comic book Day signed by G-way himself.
Now the Trade version of the Umbrella academy is out soon i would buy it but the Price is way outrageous and would never justify spending that much on a book. Nice Job Gerard Selling your TPB at 79.99

Ok really jealous that u have free comic book day in the US. Going off topic but it seems the random girls phenomenon seems universal. I couldn’t believe the TB limited edition is nearly £50.I wonder how the prices of TUA will go in the future

The Reason why the Book is So Much is BEcause Gerard Way loves Blow and needs all the money he can get.
Seriously the Guy has a problem with drugs but there is no real reason why that Trade is so expensive. All it has is the Preview FCBD and some Extra Art and Variant covers included. Those Extras truly dont Justify the price. It looks cool but thats all.
