ok i have a friend his lil bro will b 18 in couple weeks. he was caught smokin weed on halloween. seeing as he is almost 18 he will probably be charged as an adult so then he will probably have to do treatment of some sort or maybe he will just b on probation. i guess he is drinking and smoking weed almost everyday. i want to help. my issue is my friend asked for my help for resources to give his mom on what they can do to help him. problem is u cant help someone who doesnt want to be helped. i dunno i gave them a few ideas but if anyone has anything at all that might help let me know please!!

in the end, all you can do is share your experience, strenght and hope. lay the tools at his feet. after that he has to decide whether to pick them up. in 16 years working this thing we do, i still don’t know how to "make" anyone WANT to get sober. i guess that’s god’s deal. hope this helps.

The emu can sense fear but is said to respond to soothing cooing type noises. Emu’s are said to be attracted to somewhat dilapidated chew toys, preferably blue. Therefore, you will need to place assorted chew toys with recordings of you guys cooing gently in an empty room.

I will duck after I say this...but shouldn’t we be ready, willing and able to offer credible advice/suggestions to someone needing help? As always I think so.

Dang I can’t remember the name that posted this topic...crs rears it’s ugly head again lol......but............but..........

...you are correct in stating that we can not help someone to get sober that is not ready. The best we can do, as responsible, loving sober members of AA is to suggest ways that can help them find their bottom so that perhaps they will earnestly see that there is no way out but up. I watch ’Intervention’ on tv everytime I can.......it may be cheesy to some..but to me it enforces the disease...the disease that becomes a family and friends and other loved ones disease as well as it permeates the relationships with all of the addicts life. This is talked about in the BB chapters.....’The Family Afterwards’ and ’To the Wives’. Of course, those chapters discuss how the family may react AFTER getting sober. But to me, it stresses the idea that just because we get sober, it doesn’t mean the family gets ’sober’ (into recovery) right away.

The best thing I find in watching ’Intervention’ is the relief of family and friends from being ’addicted’ to. They ’prove’ this by stating their bottom lines......finally lines drawn that say ’I will no longer do such and such in order that you continue your addiction’.

I can not say that the bottom was pulled out from under me so that the only thing I could do was to get into recovery or go out into the streets-sleeping under bridges etc. But my bottom came as a result of no longer wishing to live like that anymore.....living in the demoralization, looking into the eyes of disgust and sadness of my family. It was enough, plus some physical problems-that I could have excused....that finally got me interested in recovery.

Not everyone is so inclined to bottom out when they feel it’s over, that the gig is up...sometimes we need to just let them fall.

We also have to remember that not everyone is honest enough with themselves, or that they may suffer severe emotional and mental disorders that may make it impossible to recover.

Ours is to simply share how it was for us, what we did and how it is now that we don’t do it.

Then the ball is in their court. It is up to them. Hopefully with sufficient amount of pain and suffering they will make the decision to get off the bottom and step up. But if they do or don’t...alls we can do is to pray for them.

In my home groups unity and desire to help others recover..even in the absence of those we may feel really need to get sober....we take a moment of silence each and every meeting to hold up a prayer that they too find recovery.

p.s. when I came into recovery in 1984, then relapsed and ’got it again’ in 1989 I rushed around trying to save every lost soul. It may have helped me in the beginning to believe I was attempting to save the world.but it didn’t help them. What I wish for those that are still out there, suffering probably is unimportant.....it is what they wish for themselves. I pray that they want it.

you can’t help someone who doesn’t want help!
Smoking weed is a misdemeanor and let him go through the process, they will give him random U.A.’s and drug classes. He will need to grow up on his own, you can be there as a friend but not an enabler... hope this helps
