TAMPA, Fla. — Hillsborough County, Florida, Deputy Kenneth Moon was alone at his station at a county jail facility near Tampa when an inmate attacked him with no warning.

Moon, 64, was no match for Douglas Burden, 24, in custody on various drug charges. With Moon still in his chair, Burden put him in a choke hold and pulled tight.

And then, surveillance video of the Monday attack showed, other inmates jumped into the fray.

But the other inmates joined the fight on the guard’s side, pulling Burden away from Moon and punching him in the head. One inmate grabbed Moon’s radio and called for back-up. The inmates held Burden down until other guards arrived as one of them extended a hand to help Moon up, according to the video.

Col. James Previtera, commander of Hillsborough County’s Department of Detention Services, told reporters he believed that the inmates "saved the deputy’s life."

Sounds reminiscent of an incident my grandfather described he was involved in when an officer at the Ky. state penitentiary where inmates helped defend him in an altercation he responded to.
I’ve not had the same luck, fortunately fellow staff have been there to back me up.
Just glad to hear that deputy was not seriously injured.

Sounds like he is one lucky officer. It also sounds like every one of the administration who runs his facility should be fired for having him in a situation where he was alone at a station that inmates had access to.

As to the inmates saving him, as long as they are not doing time for violent offenses, I’d be perfectly fine with some sort of time off for their actions in this situation. My department has had a few such situations over the years and they usually throw the inmate something in appreciation (transfers closer to home, etc) and I’m good with that!

Had it happen to me once.
I was feeding an inmate in the padded cell. My partner had gone to get something from our office and one of my trustees was assisting me in feeding the Pads. Now this inmate was normally fairly docile more a "self harmer" than violent.
But on this day he flipped. He tried to grab me by the throat but I was able to break the strangle hold and got him into a head and arm lock. But during the struggle food and water had gotten spilled on the floor.
So there was I with a struggling inmate with my back against the cell wall trying to stay on my feet until my partner arrived to assist me when the trustee came in grabbed the inmates other arm and between the two of us we get this guy face down on the floor. And then my partner arrives and to say the look on his face was priceless. Me and the trustee holding down a screaming lunatic. After we had secured the inmate. The trustee comes up to me as says "Please don’t tell any of the other inmates what I did." About a week later He got a transfer to a minimum security prison.
