Broad is simply a slang term for woman. But more specifically refers to either a prostitute or a woman of loose morals. ( a pimps meal ticket "wheres that broad" no just kidding about the pimp thing...)

I have also read that it could also be referring to how a woman has wider hips than men. Regardless, a very derogatory remark.

someones 80 old father had said in opposing view point that it meant the women working off broadway were always pretty so people had begun calling them "broads"

but it still doesn’t seem right to me..
