Hello all,
I hope that this finds you doing well. This E-Mail is an open invitation for all of you to attend the following Memorial Service for the Veterans of the Mexican War, 1846 to 1848. If possible I would appreciate any and all assistance in sending the word out regarding this service, as any and all help in ensuring that these Forgotten Veterans are remembered would be very much appreciated.
At 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 22nd, 2009, at the South Carolina Statehouse in Columbia, Richland County, South Carolina, there will be a Memorial Service at the Palmetto Regiment Monument. The service is being held by the Members of the Micah John Jenkins Camp No. 164, Sons of Spanish American War Veterans.
The service will be in commemoration of the action of the Palmetto Regiment, S.C. Volunteers, at the Battle of Churubusco, Mexico, on August 20th, 1846, in which the Regiment lost heavily, including its Colonel (and former Governor) Pierce Manning Butler. The service will include speakers on the War with Mexico and the Palmetto Regiment.
For directions the following map will assist you in finding the Statehouse. http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&um=1&ie=UTF-8&q=South+Carolina+Statehouse,+Gervais+Street,+Columbia,+SC&fb=1&split=1&gl=us&ei=0YOISsjAAdj7tgeY2tTnDA&sa=X&oi=local_group&ct=image&resnum=1
Following the service there will be a meeting of the Charles Devens Jr. Camp No. 10 of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War at Carolina Wings & Rib House at 600 Gervais Street, Columbia, SC, where folks will be able to come together and get a drink following the Memorial.
