BUGS- In temperate to tropical climates (and arctic during summer and spring) it is difficult to see how anyone can starve if he is willing to eat insects. Insects, grubs, earthworms, slugs, snails and spiders are edible and nutritious. String them on a length of wire or a green stick and toast them over the coals of your fire.(Remove the wing casings and legs as these are rather hard to digest.) Mash them and cook them in a pot with wild onions, acorns, and cattail tubers. Forget about what you are eating and enjoy the stew. Not: Avoid brightly colored insects or reptiles (or plants for that matter). Bright colors are an indication that this item has no natural enemies. This is usually because they are poisonous or can inflict great discomfort to a would be diner. Red is a common indicator of poison.
- Snakes are delicious. They really do taste like chicken. With poisonous varieties, remove the head and poison sacks while gutting, and skinning the carcass.
-You can obtain all of the insects you want, either as your primary source of food or as bait for fishing or traps, by dragging nylon stockings or panty hose behind you as you walk through a field. (Tie the panty hose around your ankles when you go for a walk. Collect the bugs when you are done. and go fishing.) Note: The camoflaged mosquito net head covers that hunters wear can be used for this purpose.
- Fishing- The Native Americans would fill a bag with walnut husks and throw it into a pond. The tannic acid in the husks would stun the fish and they would float to the surface. If you do this, attach a line to the bag and don’t leave it in the water for more than one minute (depending on the size of the pond) or you will kill all of the fish in the pond. (This procedure is, also, going to be illegal in most localities.)
