Bienvenidos! Welcome to El Cafesito, the Cuban coffee house in this group where we can visit with each other and talk about whatever is on our minds. All topics are fair game, even if not Cuban-related. Just follow group guidelines on how to interact in this group. :-)
ORANDO POR CUBA
Been watching CNN reporting on hurricane Ike pounding our precious homeland. It’s hard to believe the force of the waves and wind but the video is there to show us. Nuestra bella isla. Que cosa. Wow. Does anyone know a reliable organization we could donate to that would help Cuba out on this disaster?

You’re right, Felix. I also don’t think it is a surprise that it looks like Obama will be our next president. What did surprise me was what my party I’ve been a member of ever since I first registered to vote when I became old enough to do so, the GOP, has majored on the minors during their campaign rather than on the big picture issues. McCain’s choice of Palin as his VP choice also surprised me. I just can’t vote for Palin for Prez and that’s what I would be doing if I voted for McCain.
Felix, in your opinion (and I’d also LOVE to hear from other Cubans’ opinions) what’s the pulse there in Miami among the exiled community? I know I talked with mis tios recently and they didn’t like either option but were going for McCain anyways.
That’s kind of the sentiment that is around miami when it comes to Cubans. The older [wiser] folks, are voting for McCain. Some of them don’t trust Obama. Another portion have always voted Republican no matter what. Ay algunos que no quieren que salgan el negro (well..mulato) porque lo negros va estar cantando victoria (Their doing it already) y aciendose los quein tiene mas razon sobre todo. The Race card is alway going to be an issue, no matter what (Unless we do have communism, I’m ashamed to say it but it’s true) and neither of us are going to stop it soon.
The ones that have recently come from Cuba, who have been ignorant of presidents like Reagan and so on (Not by choice, mind you) tend to want Obama yet I always ask why and the response I get is ’que va a quitar el bloqueo’ which he said he wouldn’t, just aleviate travel restrictions. Another response is ’que va a traer Cambio’ or ’Me gusta como el habla’ or ’que quiero ver un negro en la casa blanca’
I’m don’t want to say that this way of thinking is idiotic, but I perceive a lack of education. For one to truly understand they’d have to study up on Learn English (To get around you really have to learn English. I’ve been called vende patria because I told a middle aged Cuban lady to learn English. And then a Mexican dude. But It’s true. It’ll be like me going to Spain and only speaking English. They’d say, "Este Tio esta loco, joder!", lol, that’s why it’s important.) , American history, study the constitution, bill of rights, declaration of independence. Learn from different angles of politics, and make a conclusion having been educated on politics enough to at least make one.
This is not really an opinion but one would become a conservative. I say that because one understands the responsibility of self governing, basic moralities, constitutional freedoms, of small government, less taxes etc etc
....The Democratic Party doesn’t fit this agenda....
...and since after Reagan, The Republicans either..
So there’s a dilemma of choosing the lesser of two evils. (In this case most are voting for McCain because they rthink that the two parties are the only one on the ballot.)
...but if you do choose the lesser evil, aren’t you still choosing evil?
I’m a registered Republican, but I vote with my head, not with my feelings or because I’m told to do something a certain way, or that I feel like I must because I’m a republican. I choose to vote my views but in a third party, and I found them in Dr. Alan Keyes who’s running in AMERICA’S INDEPENDENT PARTY along with the father of a victim of the tragedy of Columbine who shares Dr. Keyes’ views, Brian Bohrbough. ...and btw, Dr. Keyes es negro tabien y ya tuvo un debate con Obama en el 2004 por el posicion de senador de Illonois. Keyes lost because he wasn’t given the chance to campaign and was chosen by the GOP too late in the game. Keyes is a Reagan conservative.
My mother, "Ay no yo no se..."
Me, "Pues yo no se es mejor que el gringo y la vieja bruta de Palin, po’lo menos se ra enteresante no?"
vieja bruta? It’s funny because she might come off as a bit bimboish, but look at her official record? She has more experience in governing people then McCain, Obama, and Biden PUT TOGETHER. McCain to me seems like a transcendent President figure, who will probably step down because of problems, and Sarah Palin would be sworn into office.

I posted this on a bulletin
"The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism. But, under the name of ’liberalism, ’ they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened."
-- Norman Thomas, six times the Socialist Party candidate for President (1884-1968)
What do you all think of this statement by Pat Robertson? He was interviewed by Larry King, during a segment where King was asking for comments from folks regarding Obama’s win. I think of Pat Robertson as a fine individual and a statesman in his own right. I would think of Robertson as a conservative, and in many ways representing the Christian conservatives that Palin tried to engage. This is what Robertson said during the Larry King Live interview,
"Larry, I ran for President and I must say, this is the most amazing campaign that I think we’ve seen in our lifetime, or maybe in this century. Obama is absolutely brilliant and I’d like to make a prediction. He could be one of the great presidents of the United States if he doesn’t get pulled too far off the center and gets over into some of the things the American people don’t want. If he governs the way he said he’s going to, as I said, he has the smarts and the charisma to pull this nation together and be simply an outstanding president."
I guess that’s what I think as well. I agree w/Robertson’s statement. IF Obama does govern the way he said he would he could end up being one of our great presidents. In the meantime, I’m very glad Palin is no longer a heart-beat away from the presidency. Whew! LOL.
wow, why is that? Because of an interview that didn’t go as well? Remember in a debate with Reagan against Mondale, he messed up too. We’re all human. I’m not a supporter of Palin but she’s one of the most staunch Reagan Conservative in the defunct republican party. I blame the McCain campaign for not giving her the ability to give more press interviews. She was afterall picked to unite the conservative movement in the GOP but I think selfish McCain failed horribly when he held her back after her initial nomination. I think right now, she should fight to be at least Senator in Alaska. There she can have all the political experience the critics were criticizing her about. Like being Governor was a small task. Give me a break. I’d get behind a Palin run in the future.

You’re probably right in a lot of what you’re saying. Maybe the McCain people didn’t prep her right. But there’s so much you can cram into someone if they just don’t have the background and info to begin with. So maybe if she uses the next few years to get up to speed on what the world is all about she would be prepared to be a player in the national/international stage.
But just as much as her lack of information, it was her divisive rhetoric that didn’t work for me. Regan wasn’t like that. I loved Regan and surely voted for him. He was embracing. He was accepting. And he was knowledgeable. So he was, for me, the whole package. Maybe that was the job Palin was told to carry out so that the good cop, bad cop would be played out with her being the bad cop and McCain the good cop. I really don’t know what possessed McCain to pick her and all the rumors that he did it thinking Hillary voters, women specially, would vote for Palin I feel backfired. Women, in my opinion, felt insulted by this choice of an unqualified running mate. I was never a Hillary voter though I’m all for women equality...but not for propping up token females just to say a woman got on the ticket.
I don’t really think it was to gain Hillary supporters, I think as I stated above, that it was to rouse the conservative movement that had a falling out with John McCain. Though it’s debatable. The GOP though is dead on arrival, at least to me it is.
I wish I had a time machine. Reagan is one of my heroes.
Does anyone know where I can buy: Jaboncillo, Bejuco Ubí, Hojas de pimienta, Jengibre, and Raíz de China?
One of my fondest memories from growing up in Cuba was when Mama would make PRU at home and let us drink the delicious drink. Mama would make PRU and bottle it and put all these bottles, laying down on their side, in the pantry that was off of the dining room in our house. We saw her do this and saw her bottling the drink and then we would wait and wait and wait... waiting for several days until corks started popping!!! Then we knew the PRU had fermented enough and was ready to be drunk. It was sooooooooooooooooooooo delicious!!!!!!! Mama would let us drink it and it was just delish! So, over the years since we left Cuba I’ve been looking for the recipe to see if I could do it myself.
Well, tonight I actually found una receta del PRU online. Now I have to find where to get the ingredients!!! LOL
