Surge At Home?
August 01, 2008 12:55 PM
Are neighborhoods in this country in need of an Iraq-style "surge"?
Ap_mccain_080801_blog
ABC’s David Wright checks in after Senator McCain’s appearance at the Urban League.
"Answering a question about his approach to combatting crime, John McCain suggested that military strategies currently employed by US troops in Iraq could be applied to high crime neighborhoods here in the US. McCain called them tactics ’somewhat like we use in the military...You go into neighborhoods, you clamp down, you provide a secure environment for the people that live there, and you make sure that the known criminals are kept under control. And you provide them with a stable environment and then they cooperate with law enforcement.’ The way he described it, his approach sounded an awful lot like the surge. As part of his argument, McCain praised the crime-fighting efforts of former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani; Urban League president Marc Morial countered that while New York did experience a drop in crime under Giuliani, there were several major instances of police misconduct. To which McCain promised aggressive prosecution of civil rights violations and a Justice Department free from political cronyism."

Why not? It worked in Iraq.
Interesting to see what the Obama fans throw up in the way of objections.

A
I got one for ya
Biden just introduced a bill that’s better...seemingly the same idea without the military police state overtones.
Posted by: dl | Aug 1, 2008 1:42:33 PM
dl
What are the details of Biden’s plan?
Posted by: A | Aug 1, 2008 1:43:44 PM
Yeah A
go read the Crime Bill that Biden just authored.
It’s a democratic idea.
Posted by: dl | Aug 1, 2008 1:45:04 PM
50,000 new police and 1000 fbi
a surge if you will without the moneys guns and promises of power to the drug dealers and the thugs ...
...
Posted by: dl | Aug 1, 2008 1:47:19 PM
of course Bush has promised to veto Biden’s bill...
I wonder if he’ll say the same about McCain’s idea?
Posted by: dl | Aug 1, 2008 1:48:19 PM
Here’s my objection, people in high crime neighborhoods here in the U.S. are not terrorists. These neighborhoods are full of people of economic status that would appreciate being treated as equals socially and economically. How about a government that is willing to treat them like Americans, rather than "refugees" or "terrorists" -- how about a government that has faith in them to reinforce their faith in themselves.
Posted by: Randi | Aug 1, 2008 1:55:02 PM
Randi
Biden’s bill is about putting 50000 new police on the ground because crime is on a crazy rise...and 1000 new FBI
homeland security like we should eb doing instead of homeland security by going to war.
Posted by: dl | Aug 1, 2008 2:34:50 PM
There you go again, "IT"S THE GOVERNMENT"S FAULT" How about the family’s of these criminals taking responsibility when the criminals were kids. And by the way Randi, Maybe if these people acted like responsible citizens they would be treated as such. My parents allways taught me to have faith in "MYSELF" And Randi have you looked around? The refugees racing accsoss the border are treated pretty good, bad analysis...

Have any of you who support this idea actually WITNESSED the "surge" in action?
Do you realize that you are expressing support for military goons in full armor and a variety of armored vehicles with weaponry rarely seen in the private sector going full-tilt into these neighborhoods and shooting anyone who glances "the wrong way" in their direction? They act on tips from known criminals who are trying to eliminate their competition. The body count is ridiculously high, and there is no accountability ... no need to prove that the dead were "terrorists" or "insurgents", or in this case "criminals", because they are clearly dead, and the military doesn’t kill innocents.
It’s an obscene scenario. Even considering it illustrates the mental capacity of a sick child.
Posted by: Stupidscript | Aug 1, 2008 4:38:52 PM
Silly doesn’t begin to describe it ... Tell us your vision of what a municipal "surge" might look like.

Who let this man near a presidential campaign?
I do hope he picks Rudi 911ani for the Veepstakes. I could use a good laugh.

A revolution is sure to come if this A-hole gets into office..We need to control and regulate drugs.thats how we reduce the crime problem.. www.leap.cc LAW ENFORCEMENT AGAINST PROHIBITION has the right idea...

My god people! I guess it’s been awhile since I’ve visited a ’mainstream media’ website, but you people are totally brainwashed. Since 9/11, our bill of rights has been decimated and you people are eating it up! Oh, there are scary muslims hiding in caves in Afganistan AND in the bushes in your backyard. Guess we should call in the troops. When this happens, though, it will most likely be private contractors like Blackwater. Yummm, give me more death and control, blackwater, we are just helpless sheep.
How about this: buy a gun, learn how to operate it safely and effectively, store it in a safe when your gone, and blaze anyone that attempts a forced entry into your home. Your home is your castle, men! Defend it with your life. Ever heard the phrase "When seconds count, the police are just minutes away!"
I mean, really people, have a f’ing spine. Educate yourselves - visit INFOWARScom today and start becoming part of the solution rather than part of the problem. The real ware is the one for your mind and its a war you can’t afford to lose!
Posted by: OKIE 4 LIBERTY | Aug 2, 2008 12:24:27 AM
In other words, you create small pockets of a Police State in America.
That’s not the kind the type of country I want to live in... one with checkpoints to every neighborhood. If I wanted to be surrounded by Blackwater contractors, I’d move to Iraq.
Posted by: thorn | Aug 2, 2008 12:19:54 PM
I don’t want any military or police running "raids" in my neighborhood....there’s already too many. I’d rather deal with the occasional robbery then live in a police state. Trade liberty for security and you lose both, we were warned of this. Government sprawl is all around us, we have to neuter this beast now before we lose the power to.

McCain just lost my vote.
Posted by: justin | Aug 2, 2008 9:41:24 PM
I say we have a surge to remove these politicians from office. They no longer respect the Constitution and encourage/endorse theft at the highest level. The problems with crime in neighborhoods is due to the insane war on drugs and the empowerment of the black market to profit. If we eliminate the profitability of drugs, we will single-handedly end gangs from the economic benefits of the black market. I, being a Christian, am aware that we have to move beyond the same repeated mistakes of our past and move forward acting in a more reasonable direction and improve the lives of all people. With this understanding, I have realized that I will now support the likes of Ron Paul and others who understand that wisdom and truth is the best means of conflict resolution.

You can not think this is a good idea unless you purposefully want to throw away your right to life and liberty. Once your liberties are gone you can not likely vote them back into power. Wake up. Please.

This is NOT good. Oh, man we are in serious trouble when troops are used against its own citizens. The Democrats and the Republicans are both wrong. Please look into third party candidates. It is never a good idea to vote for the lesser of two evils because it is still evil. Peace

Man, are you people nuts? Have you forgotten what FREEDOM IS? Can you say police state? I guess the second "never ending" depression is here, gotta control the slaves when there are no jobs, no food, and worthless money. Get ready folks. lock and load. This isn’t about crime ( poverty MAKES crime ) it’s about controlling us during the shift into communism. The fence is not for the illegals it’s for us. It’s to keep US IN. This is all being done on purpose. Wide open borders, giant loss of manufacturing base and devalued currency. These are the things that brings a country to it’s KNEES. These traitors in DC are passing these laws to protect themselves, I mean come on, Patriot Act, FISA, with this morgage bailout bill, they piggybacked a provision in to moniter all non cash transactions thru the IRS, that means checks, money orders, paypal, credit and debit transactions ect. You think this troop thing is for your benefit? Get REAL, remember we no longer have Possee Comantatus, that means the military CAN be turned on the citizens of the USA. Welcome to communism/facism.

And how about we just declare martial law and burn what little is left of the Constitution while we’re at it?
How about it McCain? Would you like to be dictator?
The sad thing, Obama isn’t any better.
Posted by: Daniel | Aug 3, 2008 1:14:56 AM
Is Mccain purposely trying to be a liberal? I could see a Democrat coming up with this idea and even prasing it as "necessary for society," but it’s a sad day when a so called Republican comes up with such garbage.
Posted by: Andrew | Aug 3, 2008 2:06:33 AM
there are no more Liberals in American politics. Democrats are Socialists, and the NeoCons that have hijacked the Republican party are what can be properly classified as Corporatists (Fascists)
The only real liberals left in this country are Libertarians and Ron Paul Republicans. You can’t be a Liberal and advocate big Government. More Government means more regulation and more regulation means less liberty. Ergo, by definition a true Liberal cannot support Big Government, much less champion its growth.
Posted by: Jay | Aug 3, 2008 9:16:57 AM
Jay, I think you’re referring to Classic Liberals, which are indeed Libertarians. Todays Liberals, however, are the complete opposite of Libertarians. I think it was FDR who hijacked the word "liberal" and ever since it has referred to the Left (ie big government, do everything for me nanny state). It’s very similar to what neo-conservatives are currently doing to the word and the movement that was once Conservatism.

All hail the Police State! Any who resist will be shot on sight, and any who voice their opinions against the Leviathan will be subdued and brought to prison camps to be tortured endlessly! The military will be walking through the street with AK-47’s and full body armor shooting everyone that comes out of their house, and you brainwashed nuts watching television will be cheering them on. Military law is not going to solve any of our problems. Get informed and protect yourselves; who is going to save you from the criminal cops breaking down your door even though you have done nothing wrong? It is coming down to that; let me assure you.
Are any of you really advocating a military "surge" on our own cities? Wow..go back to sleep. The new world order will take good care of you.
Posted by: Rakkur | Aug 3, 2008 2:13:23 PM
i guess Mccain doesn’t know what posse comitatus is.

Posted by: stitches | Aug 5, 2008 3:01:56 AM
"OK"
Does anyone remember Kent State?
Put the Military in the streets and death by mistake will be our future. Have we in the US, no other way to stop crime(excuse) answer: use the Police!
Believe you me, if I see Military coming to my Home it will be time for me to take my own action and meet my maker.
It will be over for us and Big brothers Department of F.E.A.R. would of won.
(Federal Eradication And Retaliation)
This is the next Evil Department to come about, just like HOMELAND Security Dept.
Homeland sounds to much like the Fatherland (Nationalist Socialist Party)
Whats that spell NAZI.
Posted by: Sharky | Aug 5, 2008 9:09:09 AM
I’m sure our Founding Fathers would love McCain’s idea of fasict police-state with soldiers on every corner. Oh yeah, that’s what liberty is all about!

There were no WMDs and Saddam was not ever a threat to the USA, neither Irag not Iran. Those killed innocents blood cries out. This dictatorship requires impeachment.
