Anyone have there blood counts drop really low with flare ups? recently was hospitalized for a unknown reason. docs says its a toss up between something viral or a flare...docs are confused if the blood counts fell because of lupus or there thinking possiblites of something else...cancer? among other things...

HI, I M NEW TO THIS GROUP. I HAVE BEEN DIAGNOSISED WITH SLE LUPUS LAST OCTOBER, AND HAVE BEEN SICK REALLY FOR 3 YEARS PRIOR, BEFORE THEY ACTUALLTY DIAGNOSED ME. I WAS GOING THREW ALOT AT THE TIME , AND THEY KEPT TREATING FOR DEPRESSION. I EVEN HAD ONE DOCTOR TELL ME I WAS BIPOLOAR. ANYHOW, I HAVE HAD SIGNS OF THE LUPUS AND HAVE BEEN TEST SEVERAL TIMES SINCE I WAS ABOUT 17, ESPECIALLY WHEN I WAS PREGNANT. THEY WOULD ALWAYS TEST ME, BECASUE MY BLOOD WORK WOULD COME BACK CRAZY.

MY QUSTION WHAT IS A DANEROUSLY LOW BLOOD COUNT FOR US LUPUS PATIENTS?? I HEAR ANYTHING BELOW 4.5. DOES ANYOPNE KNOW, IF THIS IS TRUE? OTHER THAN IRON WHAT CAN HELP RAISE THIS COUNT? WHAT IS A GOOD OR BETER COUNT DURING A FLARE.

THANKS ALL FOR ANY INFO. THIS DISEASE REALLY SUCKS. I CAN BEARLY TAKE CARE OF MY KIDS AND I HAVE 5 OF THEM IM RAISING ALONE, ALONG WITH FINANCIAL PROBLEMS, BECAUSE I CANT WORK ANYMORE.

Hi, well i can only tell you about my situation with low blood counts. I was diagnosed with Lupus over 20 years ago now, but i initially was diagnosed with a very low blood count. I can’t remember what my count was but i know it was low and was put on a course of steroids that night to then have to go to our local pathology lab the following morning for more tests. You blood count is controlled by your spleen as far as i can remember, and to the best of my knowledge there is no way, other than meds, that can increase your count again. My count came back up with the steroids and, touch wood lol, my count has been fine ever since. So, hopefully if you are put on meds then that will rectify the problem for you.

All the very best and i’ll be thinking about you.
