I have a company buying a truck in Iowa and driving it back bobtail to their home state of Georgia.

The USDOT and MC are Active. They have the proper levels of insurance and driver qualification and drug testing is completed.

The dealer in Iowa said that all they need to travel from IA to GA is the Bill of Sale? The dealer in Iowa is not offering a temporary IRP registration.

I disagree with the dealer statement that only a Bill of Sale is needed. Can you please explain what vehicle credentials they need to legally maneuver from Iowa to Georgia?

I say they need Trip and Fuel Permits for every state they drive in from Iowa to Georgia; and a temporary sign with his Company Name, City, State, USDOT and MC numbers. Should he also list “Not for hire” for the trip from IA to GA?

Thank you advance for your advice. LR, Loxahatchee

That is great question

The carrier will need to obtain a trip permit and fuel permit for every state that he/she is crossing thru. It’s advisable that carrier obtain all the permit prior to the movement of the vehicle, as some of the states are not "Port of Entry State" (Difference: A Port of Entry state will let you drive to the nearest weight station to purchase a temporary permit, a non "Port of Entry state will issue a fine just for the mere fact that you crossed into their state line without a permit)

A temporary tag, and temporary sign such as a piece of cardboard attached to the passenger side windshield with the carriers name and the US DOT number. The wording "NOT FOR HIRE" is not necessary.

Keep on Trucking!!!
