I screwed myself into working at a women’s retail store and at a certain point I started writing "GODLESS" on my hand so customers could see that I am godless. Of course I know that people can’t go around writing stuff on their bodies without expecting their employers to have a problem with it and the company i work for has a policy against visible tattoos. I figured that when my boss finally confronts me about it I’ll just wear chain around my neck with some kind of pendant or dog tag with godless written on it. Just like the christians at my work who have their crosses around their necks. I though that would be fair but when I inquired, after being told not to write on my hand, my boss told me that the chain idea could comeback as a harassment complaint because people find it offensive. She went on to tell me that the cross is ok because it is like a fashion statement. I think this is unfair so I tried to email the ACLU to ask if it was legal but the have not gotten back to me and i stopped waiting. I don’t know. Am I over reacting by going to the labor commission or should I just let it go? Just to let you guys know I work at Charlotte Russe out in Primm and the manager is Laura. <--she is a dumb dumb bitch!

I would go with a freethought related necklace; evolve fish, american atheists, etc.

I would fight it and see what happens. It’s not like you have a career on the line, I mean, it’s Charlotte Russe. Big whoop.

I have to throw my $.02 in here.

I am all for individuality. I heartily defend one’s right to personal expression, but I also believe there is a time and a place for certain things.

I think this situation in particular comes down to why one holds a job: does one hold it to advertise one’s personal beliefs, or does one hold it to earn a living? IMHO, for the most part, one’s personal preferences and beliefs should take a back seat, especially when they might create tensions that detract from the primary purpose any business is in business: to make money.

I’ve been at the same job for more than four years. Over the course of those years, my coworkers have become familiar with my position on religion and god. None of my coworkers expresses an overwhelming need to "save my soul" either.

I do not feel a need to be overt about it. If they ask, I’ll gladly tell them what I think and how I feel. Otherwise, there’s work to do. I earn a decent wage with good benefits, I do not see any reason to jeopardize this in any way.

This is not a situation where theist co-workers were somehow recieving preferential treatment to the detriment of a non-theist, neither is this a clear-cut case of anti-atheist bias. You opened yourself up to this by deliberately drawing undue attention to yourself in an inappropriate manner. Nobody is denying your right to free speech by suggesting that the workplace is not a proper public forum for you, or anyone else, to engage in attention-seeking behavior. Either you’re there to do a good job and earn a decent paycheck, or your not. Which will it be?
