Modern Day "Barrabasites" by Pastor Tony Romo
It just continues to amaze me how our modern day "Barabbasites" continue to have their way.
Remember Luke 23:13-25? We read in verse 18: "And they cried out all at once, saying, Away with this man, and release unto us Barabbas." Here was a convicted robber (John 18:40), anarchist, traitor and murderer (Luke 23:25) who deserved his condemnation, yet the crowd was saying, "Give us Barabbas!"
This gullible mob had been manipulated by their leaders: "the chief priests and elders persuaded the multitude that they should ask Barabbas, and destroy Jesus" (Matt. 27:20). They had been convinced that Jesus was guilty of rebellion against Caesar (government), although Caesar's representative, Pilate, found no fault in him. Yet the crowd yelled, "Give us Barabbas!"
I wrest not the Scriptures. Allow me to make my point.
The modern day "Barabbasites" continue to yell today, "Give us Barabbas." When the very politicians they are calling for are guilty of robbery through unconstitutional taxes, guilty of anarchy in rebellion against the Constitution, guilty of treason with their defiant violation of their oath to "preserve, protect and defend" the Constitution, guilty of murdering a million and a half innocent babies a year without so much as an effort to pass a bill to outlaw abortion. Yeah, "give us Barabbas," that's exactly what we deserve.
Who are the "Barabbasites"? They are the gullible American Christians who have been convinced by their leaders (pastors and "Christian" politicians) that true Constitutionalists are guilty of rebellion against Caesar (government) and should be "crucified" (at least politically).
"Give us Barabbas!" they exclaim when they hold up their John McCain signs. "Give us Barabbas !" they cry when they hold up their Mitt Romney signs. "Give us Barabbas!" they yell when they pull the lever for Mike Huckabee. "Give us Barabbas!" they scream when they're dazzled by Rudy Giuliani.
And just like the crowd that wanted Barabbas had its way, this American crowd will also have its way. They will have their "Barabbas." Who will that ultimately be ? Well, only the Lord knows that. But a Barabbas he will be.
True Constitutionalists are considered extremists in today's political environment. Most Christians, because of their ignorance of the Bible and the Constitution, are led to believe that "Barabbas" is more trustworthy than the Constitutionalist. They quote Romans 13 blindly and claim that we should submit to the higher authorities. Yet they don't realize that the "higher authority" is the very one we're calling everyone's attention to: The Constitution.
What they are really saying, in their pseudo-sophisticated, uninformed way, is that we should submit to tyrants. Send your precious children to war at the whim of the tyrant ("give us Barabbas"). Bring your children back in cold body bags and wrapped in a flag ("give us Barabbas"). Allow the illegal invaders to come in and trample over everything we've built-- that's "Compassionate Conservatism" ("give us Barabbas"). Watch our beloved country crumble under the weight of tyrant irresponsibility ("give us Barabbas"). Watch your children grow up to be "Barabbasites" as they're forced into government schools after home schools and Christian schools are out-lawed by the tyrants ("give us Barabbas"). And yes, inject your babies with Mercury-laden vaccines, Barabbas says they're safe ("give us Barabbas").
Yeah, I know, I'm a wacko. That's just what a "Barabbasite" would say. And what should we do with wackos? "Crucify him, crucify him."
No, I'm not suggesting that we Christian Constitutionalists are perfect as Jesus or that we even measure up to his standard, but I do mean to illustrate the same relentless pursuit of righteousness that Jesus exemplified. We must not be persuaded by the "leaders" in politics, the church or the news media, to demand Barabbas as our choice. We must relentlessly pursue "Righteousness" in demanding that our government be restrained by the chains of the Constitution. The Barabbases of today don't give a squat about the Constitution, and the "Barabbasites" don't give one squat about the Bible. Not really.
Some of the worse "Barabbasites" I know stand behind pulpits every Sunday. These are the ones referred to as "elders" in Matthew 27:20.
Many of them have sent me the dreaded,"take me off your e-mail list" message. They fear the IRS more than they fear GOD. Their most prized possession is their 501(c)3 status. They fear the flock more than they fear the Chief Shepherd. They are full of pride and are arrogantly unteachable. The Bible is no more practical to them than it would be to an infidel. They don't dare admit that "they don't know." They are ignorant when it comes to the Constitution, but they don't dare admit it, thus remaining ignorant. "My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children" (Hosea 4:6). Not just ignorance but willful ignorance.
Yes, "the chief priests and elders persuaded the multitude that they should ask Barabbas, and destroy Jesus" (righteousness), and the spirit of that age continues in this age. James (paraphrased) said, "Don't many of you pretend to be teachers, knowing that we (teachers) shall be judged more severely" (James 3:1)
Many of the "sweet-treat" preachers will be in for a big surprise when they stand before the Lord and have to give an account for the worthless, shallow philosophies they pawned-off for preaching. But many of the "hard-shelled," toxic preachers will be in for a greater surprise when it's revealed that they were "teaching for doctrines the commandments of men" (Mark 7:7).
That's the influence that's "persuaded ... that they should ask Barabbas."
We continue to re-elect the "Barabbases" who have been proven to be robbers, anarchists, traitors and murderers.
An ignorant multitude can be persuaded to do just about anything (remember Jonestown?). Kool Aid, anyone? Yes, I'm afraid that the "Barabbasites" will, once again, have their way.
Who am I supporting? Well, it should be pretty obvious by now.
Dr. Ron Paul is the only Constitutionalist running for President in this primary season. All the others whether "conservative," "moderate" or "liberal," whether Republican or Democrat, are plainly and simply, Barabbases. I have no doubt that the Founding Fathers would endorse Dr. Ron Paul overwhelmingly.

Dr. Ron Paul only represents what we Constitutionalists believe. It's not just a campaign; it's a movement. The campaign will end, the movement will live on. It's not even about Ron Paul, but about what his message represents: Freedom. The kind of freedom for which our Founding Fathers mutually pledged to each other their lives, their fortunes and their sacred honor.
There is an inherent spirit of liberty in God's people: "where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty" (2 Cor. 3:17b). And eventually God's people will have to come to terms with their own ignorance. They must recognize that they've been wilfully ignorant and extremely gullible in maintaining their arrogant and unteachable spirit. I'm trusting the Lord to do a work in the lives of my brethren, and in me, to love liberty more than seek security.
"Give us our Constitution," should be our cry, not, "give us Barabbas." Barabbas won't do anything but plunder, murder and betray us. The Constitution is all we have to guarantee the "unalienable rights" given to us by our Creator as expressed in the Declaration of Independence. Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness is still a worthwhile goal for all of us who love liberty (especially in the spiritual sense). We're obligated to hold our government accountable to the people as expressed in the Constitution. The fearmongering being used by some in our government is a leverage to pry our rights away from us. And it's working.
Our faith rests on Jesus Christ. And if we crash and burn as a nation, our faith rests on Jesus Christ. If we win in our battle for the restoration of our Constitution and our Republic, our faith rests on Jesus Christ. I'm trusting the Lord for my eternal security. I'm trusting the Lord for my temporal security. Either way in freedom or in bondage, I will trust the Lord.
But I cannot say that I trust the Lord if I demand,"Give us Barabbas." We must stand for righteousness and trust the Lord.
Will the "Barabbasites" continue to have their way? I fear they will. I trust they won't.
"Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people" (Proverbs 14:34).
