Okay, I have another question... My boyfriend is in his second cycle of chemo and the last two days he's been constantly nauseous and throwing up. Everytime he throws up he gets a wave of a hot flash which is hell on top of his regular hot flashes. He's tried taking his Ativan regularly through the day and tried taking his compazine and the ativan doesn't help and the compazine only seems to actually make him sick.
I've made him try saltines, sipping on sprite, holding a cool rag to his forehead and the back of his neck. But nothing seems to help.
On Monday we can ask if there's an alternate med than the compazine. But in the meantime, does anyone have any tips that we can try so he can feel better and have some peace?

Zofran seems to help and doesn't make you feel sicker. I myself use Ativan to help me to relax at night to go to bed. Compazine didn't really work for me and made me feel nauseaous too. When you go to the doc. tomorrow if they don't mention Zofran, ask about it. Everyone does respond differrently, but it's worth a shot. Good Luck.

Zofran and Kytril are much better than Compazine, and don't cause sleepiness like Ativan does.
One or the other can cause terrible constipation though, so some senna or another stool softener would be a good thing to take with them.

decadron is also used to help with nausea and vomitting caused by chemotherapy. zofran and compazine can be used simultaneously since they work on different receptors. compazine also comes as suppository if he cannot keep anything in his stomach. ativan can be dissolved under the tongue as well. other drugs used in the hospital setting are phenergan, reglan, and droperidol. a new drug just approved recently was emend (arepitant) ... not sure what chemos your boyfriend recieved but maybe that drug is an option.. hth

U seem to be on the right track...Also, try pedialyte...orange....It builds up the electrolytes and we gave it to my dad when the chemo made him so sick...He called it his orange water...good luck to u...The doc also gave him atropine and phenergan...

there is an oral form of "marijuana" called marinol (dronabinol) - that way you don't have to risk exposing your lungs to 14, 000 different harmful chemicals - it is also used to increase appetite.

marinol is legal - marijuana is a schedule 1 narcotic (federal law - which supercedes state law) and is an illegal drug. there are more harmful chemicals in 1 joint than 1 cigarette! we can continue this discussion off the message board if you prefer - i am not going to clutter this topic with a debate about illegal substances.
