Has anyone had experience? We just found out tonight after a trip to the ER that my 16 year old god daughter has a 5cm one in her right ovary. They told her it is the size of a baseball and she needs to see a obgyn immediately tomorrow morning and will need surgery. They said it is the type that isn't just liquid, it is a mass. She has been having pains off and on for a year and went to the ER about a year ago but her dad wouldn't wait because the pains went away while she was there and he didn't want to wait for them to do a cat scan...he told her it had to be just cramps or a tummy ache.....ugghhh!!! I feel like an ass because she called me on Sat. and asked what would cause her to have a period for 1 month, i told her it could be because she has been really active (she is a cheerleader) and it's been hot plus stress because her bf of 1 year and her broke up :o( i will never tell anyone this could be normal again. I'm so worried for her and her future...

When I was 15 I started cramping so bad that I couldn't get outta bed! My mom thought I was fakinga lot of it....but I wasn't. This went on for about a year. Finally one night I was working and doubled over and couldn't get back up. My employer wasnted to fire me for trying to get outta work, and I told them that I really didn't care. i called my mom to come and get me. We went to the hospital and they then told me that I had ovarian cysts. My right ovary was about 75% engulfed in this mass, and the left about 50%. I was scared to death!!! My mom made me an appointment with an OBGYN and after doing several ultrasounds they told me that they were going to have to remove both my ovaries. I protested and said they most definately will not. I tood my mom that there was no way at 16 years old I was giving up my right to have children. I told her that I wanted a second opinion. So we made a new appointment with a wonderful doctor. She told me that right then they didn't believe they were yet cancerous. She said that removal of my ovaries would be her last option. She decided to try me out on some hormones to see if it would regulate my hormones and reduce or dissolve the cysts. She put me on a low-dose birth control pill. Twoo weeks later they had drastically reduced in <myspace>size</myspace> and within a month they were gone.
Six months later I started having cramps again. we went back to the doctor to find out that my cysts had returned. She uped my BCP and again they went away.
I had to bump my BCPs twice, but once she put me on Ortho Try-Cyclin, I haven't had a problem since.
I was extremely worried about coming off the BCPs. Me and my husband are trying to have a baby so I quit taking my BCPs in January. To this day I haven't had one problem. I did have a PAP in March that scared me because they thought that my right side felt swollen. THey sent me in for an ultrasound and they told me that I had the prettiest and healthiest set of ovaries that she had ever seen. So I haven't had any problems thus far.
i just make sure that I tell all my docs about it when I go in. THey don't forsee me having a problem with having children due to this.....so I guess we will see. I have had two miscarriages since AUG but they have told me that it would have nothing to do with my cysts.
I hope i have covered everything, and atleast answered some of your questions. If you want to know anything else just ask.

Thank you so much! It's good to know that they were able to be managed with BC pills. She was already told by the ER that she would need surgery to have it removed. I will definetly be doing research on any thing the doctor says he needs to do before he does it. The ER took her off of school. She was taken to her pedi. today to get a referal to a obgyn which isn't until the 27th but, she was released back to school and told to resume regular activities which includes chearleading.

I would leave everything up to her, if she feels like she is ok to go back to normal activites, then by all means, go for it. But if she is still hurting, I wouldn't put anymore stress onher body. It is a painful and difficult thing to deal with. She willknow what she can and can't do. And if they are wanting to do surgery, then make sure she is comfortable with what they are going to do. Ask all the questions you can, because once it's done, there is no going back.
I wish you both the best of luck and let me know how it turns out! You are n my prayers.

Has she been tested for Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome? It can cause infrequent or missed periods and pain. PCOS is one of the top causes of infertility, and occurs in 1 out of every 10 women. I would suggest having her tested or at least speaking to her doctor about it. I would also suggest a glucose tolerance test as well because insulin resistance is also correlated with PCOS. Good luck.

I have a cyst on my right ovary, not sure how big it is tho. It would ache when i ovulated from that side and sometiems when i had sex. It is probably the cause of my ectopic pregnancy... My OB/GYN told me taht my baby got caught or something up in it...Luckily i still have my ovary
I hope your daughter is ok! hopefully she will not need surgery, hope that medicine will take care of it!!!! thoughts and prayers to you

I had when I was 16. I was pregnant with my oldest daughter. I had to have surgery but it really wasn't a big deal. But mine was only liquid. I hope everything turns out ok.
