Greetings Kung Fu Club!

Our training is progressing at a very nice pace and I am seeing excellent work from you guys. We are still only at the beginning stages but you can start to see just how deep and advanced the Siu Lum (Shaolin) arts truly are.

Now that we are putting footwork, stances, waist motion and strikes together, things are going to get alot more fun!

This thread is for your comments, questions, etc. on the Ng Lung Choi or 5 Wheel Fist form. Examine what you have learned so far and let's get a discussion going. Examples: How are the building blocks that you started with coming together at each stage and now incorporated into the Ng Lung Choi set? What guiding principles / concepts that you have learned can you identify in the movements of the NLC set? What difficulties are you having?

This is a good venue for us to share info. and knowledge so I hope that you will take advantage of it and post.

Regards,

Sifu Mario.

In the Ug Lung Choi form, I am trying to keep my stances solid while doing the movements with my hands and waist. This form takes more concentration on the moves than Ug Lung Ma. I really like this form. I ve been also trying to manage my breathing a little more.... well im gonna go practice now.

Stevo,

Let the addition of the hand movements be a tool for you. In Ng Lung Ma, you had to work the waist on its own to make it turn in sync with the lowering of your stance. Now, with Ng Lung Choy, you have the hands powerec by the force and momentum generated by the waist and stances. Time all movement to end at a single coordinated moment and use the complete extension of the shoulder and arm to help you get the waist to extend to new levels.

It takes time, but you will see that the practice of these forms will yield fruits in leg strength, trunk flexibility and strenght and increased relaxed power to your hands.

Sifu,
The biggest difficulty I have at the moment is total body awareness...meaning making sure my feet are in the proper angle, shoulders not tense, waist utilized..etc. I think this will come with time. I did a little on my own today. Its a great workout.

Hi Luis,

Yes, that is one of the most difficult challenges in learning kung fu, the coordination and control of various body parts at the same time. You have to feel and be aware.... Practice gets the body to awaken and then body memory comes into the equation.

Most everyone goes throughth this, so don't be discoureaged, you will definitely get it, in fact you are getting it as we speak.

As I say during class, you are learning to move in a different way, one which you are not used to but that is more efficient, more relaxed and more coordinated. You are also expanding your awareness so that you can keep track of your whole body and control it. This is the goal of these exercises.

Excellent! Keep up the good work.
