Ok guys. There are a lot of you that still live in Wichita, and those are the people that we should lean on the most. Typically, as in almost every single reunion I"ve ever heard about, the 10 year is exciting, but not. First of all, most people's complaints is that it is too 'clique'like" and people tend to speak to only the ones they spoke to in high school. It's the 20 and 30 that people tend to enjoy more. So, I'm sure ours will be the same. BUT, I went to the 1997 reunion as a date, and no offense to that class, it was pretty dull. In my opinion, we should try to avoid the things I saw them do.
1. The slideshows were mostly pictures of the people and friends of who put the reunion together. That was dumb. It isolates people and doesn't allow everybody to move forward. Of course, you can only get pictures that are submitted, and can't be blamed for those personnel that don't submit anything, but ladies, (since it's normally the ladies putting this together) we don't want to see how special YOU were in high school, we want to see a collaboration.
2. The first night was in old town at Heroes in the reserved space outside. Everybody drank, caught up, fun fun. Then it left nothing for anybody to talk about the next day. That is why I suggest actual events at the possible formal, dining event, provided our class chooses to have one. I have some great ideas for these events, so please get with me if you want to hear.
3. Nobody really showed up to the formal dining/dance on the Saturday night because 1) it was way too expensive, 2) it was so small of an area 3) information wasn't put out that you could skip the expensive dinner and attend the dance for a smaller fee 4) everybody already caught up with each other the night before so there was no incentive! I know it is costly to rent a space and cater, but we have to put word out sooner, and to more people if we want them to participate!!
4. There was horrible mis-communication. They attempted to have a 'pool' barbeque, but only a handfull showed up because it wasn't clear as to when, where, and what was needed (often times money was needed to participate). We don't want to alienate anybody from coming. And face it, not everybody is going to have the funds to participate. We want to make it as easy for those personnel to attend as well.
So, some of this may be a no brainer, but if you wait til last minute and only have those people that party in Wichita, and were "me me me" in high school, you will put together a poor reunion. And the 10 year may dictate who shows up for the 20 and 30. I just want to have a positive experience, as do most of you. You guys need to start making a for sure committee. It doesn't have to be the class president at all. We should have some of you guys submit self nominations and then from the people that participate, choose those people we want to set up. Not a vote, but trust me, the more, the merrier! Leaving it to 3 people will produce a bias reunion, as I have seen. So James, since you are our 'moderator' put the word out that we want people maybe, next summer or winter to start putting a committee together, then those personnel that will be our committee can begin some of the ideas and contacting people. Set a timeline you want pictures submitted, then a timeline you want reservations.
We may have a good reunion if we steer clear of the common reunion!!!
