Two pieces of acute media cynicism about St Bonio's upcoming honourary Knighthood announcement.

"... But the premature announcement that Bono is to be honoured has sparked fury among MPs who see it is a cynical political ploy by Downing Street's spin machine.

They have accused Tony Blair of "cheapening" the honours system and trying to shift attention from Iraq by breaking the news about the U2 frontman one week ahead of the rest of the New Year's honours.

The list is usually announced on New Year's Eve but the Foreign Office, who is responsible for honorary knighthoods, said they wanted to pay "special tribute" to Bono.

It is also excellent timing for the U2's greatest hits record 18 which is battling to be No 1 in the UK album chart."

Bono joins Geldof as an honorary Dublin knight.
