I subscribe partially to liberation theology. Based on when I read and researched Gutierrez's "A Theology of Liberation, " I thought it was too worldly and politically-oriented. There seemed to be more focus on man rather than God--or on communism instead of christianity. Not that the two are mutually exclusive, as proven by non-Latin versions of liberation theology, such as black liberation theology, which I'm currently taking a class on. Black liberation theology focuses on Christ as a liberator also, but God plays a more active and mystic part in the struggle for freedom. The Christianity is otherworldly in that sense, but uses the otherworldliness as a goal, rather than legitimation for accomodating ungodly systems. Their "other-world" can affect "this world" by provideing ethical and prophetic critique of the present social order. For example, Nat Turner's eschatological visions directed him to attempt a strategy of violence to overturn the system of slavery.

It just seems to me that black liberation theology is more humble and true to Christ, not to mention more successful.

I gues that socialism in all its forms (be it revolutionary or democratic socialism) is not about charity or looking after the poor. Left wing politics is about giving the poor political power through a more direct form of democracy.

The concept of charity and taking pity on the poor is actuallly very reactionary and is compatable with European pre-modern concepts of Paternalistic traditionalism on which European Conservativism has always thrived (this is opposed to the more libertarian conservativism of the USA which is based on individualism.)
