I am curious if anyone out there would be willing to share what they make $$ wise as a substitute in their area.
In the district I work for substitutes are part of the union, and are therefore part of the bargaining agreement, so this district pays slightly higher than other districts in the area. I make $18.207 an hour, minimum 4 hours. We do have to pay union dues in any month that we work, but it is only like $22, and we get all the protections under the union so that is ok with me!

The subs here aren't a part of the union. Around here subs get paid per day and can make a range depending on the district. The school I work at most pays on a sliding scale: $75 for the first 20 days, $80 for days 21-45, and $85 thereafter. The other school I currently sub at pays $80 flat. One I used to sub at pays $90 flat, and my old high school pays $100 flat.

Hmm that is interesting that they use a sliding scale. To keep subs wanting to work here they offer bonuses, like if you work 90 days, with atleast 45 of those in the last half of the year you get like $750 during the summer. Now do you get the flat rate for the entire day if you only work 1/2 day?

For half days, you get half of the regular rate. The one school I work at just has you stay all day in case something comes up, if it doesn't, you just help out with other duties the rest of the day, which is nice.

That is nice that they are willing to find you other things to do. How often would you say your work? Are you able to make ends meet on your sub pay or do you have another job?

I work a lot. Last year I worked 130 days total at both schools. The only times during the school year that I don't work regularly are September and January. Since I am currently living back with the parents, I can save money. I also began selling Mary Kay last year to help bring in a little extra cash, but I don't really work that as hard as I could on that and don't do a lot of parties. Last year I was able to just sub, but now that I'm starting work on my master's, I got a job working at Macy's part-time to help pay for it.

In Chester County PA, the substitute program is centrally administered for 5 school districts. The one-day rates vary from $80 to $100.00 per day. The long-term rates after more than 20 consecutive days vary from $110.00 to $150.00 per day.

Maybe the cost of living is less there or something, but I can not see how anyone can live on $80 a day! I made more than that teaching preschool. The district I work in pays $145.65 a day, and if you take a long term assignment you get more based on education and where you would land on the salary scale.

The cost of living is pretty low here, but subs, like mostly everywhere else are underpaid. Most subs have another job, while the rest are married and their husbands support them and sub for extra cash. I think I need to find me one of those men...of course, its hard to do that when you are living in a city (Pittsburgh) that was rated as one of the worst for dating...I think I'm just screwed no matter how you look at it...jobs and men, both almost an impossibility to find a good one around here!

Well, I'm working on the man thing...hehe. My live-in boyfriend finishes his Bachelor's degree in Business in a week from tomorrow!! I've been lucky to have him around to contribute a bit, and I've gotten a little extra financial aide from going to school. I have not been wanting to get another job because I do not want to be unavailable during the day to sub, and I want to have nights and weekends free to actually see my boyfriend and friends.

My school district pays $80/day, $40/half day, and up to $115 for long term. As far as I know, it's one of the lowest in the city. The district I taught at before this (I used to teach full-time) paid $95/day and went up to $145 for long term - but it was a much rougher district ;)
When I first graduated from college, I subbed days and waitressed nights - it was rough and I had NO free time! Now I sub during the day, after school I do ABA therapy with toddlers who have autism. The money definitely isn't as great as it was waitressing, but the work is a whole lot more rewarding. Plus I don't have to work late nights! I don't think I could pay my rent every month if I only subbed, though.

I sub for many different schools, but in the Minot, ND system we get $80 for in town and $90 if we commute to the AFB. Don't you all have to have your teaching license in order to sub?? We do here!! I thought it was nationwide. Maybe I was wrong! I just had my first day back as a sub Monday and I am glad I am back!! YAY!!

Not in Texas.
Since I'm under 23 I can't Sub for high school teachers.
But I like how the kids think I'm like 25...lol.
I'm glad that you don't have to have a teaching license. I get to experience how it is to be a teacher which can help me decide if I want to go to school to become a teacher.
Right now I have no clue on what I want to do. I'm just back and forth!!
