What do you think is the most important thing to have in a youth group? Service? Friendship? Worship? Bible Study? Something else? Why? What is it about your choice that will make our youth group the MOST pleasing to God?

I think I am the most important thing to have at youth group! haha. No seriously I think reading the Bible is the most important thing because you come to youth group hopefully to learn more about God. And learning about God through his word is most pleasing to him.

Interesting.

How do you know that the Bible is the BEST way to learn about God? Are there other ways that might be just as pleasing to him?

Closed circuit to Zach:

If God is in ROCK, then Jesus is in the "wakka-chukkas" and the Holy Spirit is in the "meedlys"

I do think that the best way to learn about God is the Bible because it is the truth. Nothing else even comes close.

YES OH REALLY. I mean you can sing songs with the kids, and play games with them and stuff but it really doesnt teach them about who Jesus was and who God is. I think there needs to be a lot more scripture reading in our youth group. Thats just my opinion. I know some people will disagree with it.

Yup I'm one of em' ;)

In the mind of a younger person(s) one must ask them selves from a standpoint of a child as to whether the juice is worth the squeeze. Suppose we define the juice as learning about jesus and god the squeeze being singing about him and playing games related to the subeject will look far more apealling then lots of reading.... Just something to ponder.

Let me throw you a few bones:

What about service? Are we being more Christ-like when we're sitting around talking about good things or actually DOING them?

What about prayer? Are we better off reading about how God spoke in the past, or are we bold enough to let him speak to us NOW?

What about community? The Bible has some great advice, but it doesn't have ashoulder to cry on when you're goong through hard times.

What about study? We can take the Bible at face value, making the same interpretive slip-ups of past generations, or we can find out what others have said and weigh it agains scripture.

And what about music? Through song, we can communicate BIBLICAL TRUTH in a way that connects to youth who are presently the furthest culture away from a worldview that can make wense of the Bible in the history of the world.

Yes, the Bible is the BEST tool God has given us to understand who he is, but perhaps other settings are more appropriate for reading it at length.

Thoughts?

I am just getting this feeling that the only reason kids come to Youth Group is to hang out with their friends and thats it. That cant be the only reason to come.

Was it not Peter (correct if i'm wrong cullen but i think this was in one of your teachings?>) who said bring peple to the church through any circumstances?

but beside the point, frankly i'd preferably see those kids hanging around there friends in a church enviornment rather then slum neighborhoods or w/e other circumstances.

But yes it's probably better they don't come at all (rollseyes)

just because they arent in a church doesnt mean they will be out doing drugs. their parents are or should be teaching them about drugs. it is our job to teach them about the BIBLE.

I think you missed the layers upon layers of sarcasm which I speak of.

Just because kids show up without the intent to necessarily learn about god doesn't mean we should simply give up on them and show them the door. It would be hypocrytical for us as a church to say all are welcome and turn around and say if they don't wan't to learn about god that they should leave. ALL are welcome.

~ "and welcome persons of all races, sexual orientations, and economic circumstances."
