Looking around the group, I see a lot of young "hippies", which is cool. My parents were hippies, back in the day, but I don't think they'd be considered hippies now. So, is being a hippie just happen during a time in your life, then goes away? Do you grow out of it? Does it become too tough to maintain hippie status and earn a living, make babies?
Or to get a bit deeper... Is being a hippie a state of mind afforded only by the educated and privelaged?
Peace,
Dave

to comment I think hippy is a state of mind and I have alot of friends whose parents are hippies and still dress and eat all the organic foods and smoke and live the enitre lifestyle. Then I have friends whose parents (myne included) used to be hippies and may not look like it or act like it but when they talk about their views on certain things they still havent changed that much.

you don't grow out of yourself. If you are hippie at heart, you will forever be a hippie.

Ive been told for many years im a hippie and I feel that it is a state of mind. I use to dress more like a hippie and now not so much, I dont smoke anymore, (pot or cigs) and I dont go to shows or do the things I used to do that would be catagorized as a hippie. I have a son now and have chosen to leave alot of that behind but I still believe in peace and caring about the environment and eating healthy. I thinks its a state of mind and you can still have a hippie mentality even if you dont necessarily look or act like a hippie.

sorry it's soo long..i posted this in another forum but i though it pretty much applied here as well
when i'm not refered to as a "dirty hippie" by friends and family alike, all with love of course, i hear the terms neo-hippie and psudo-hippie most..if someone feels that that they have to lable me these i don't really mind.. i dont' like to be referred to as a "wanna be" because it's not that i want to be something i'm not, i just am. I was raised by hippies, taught by hippies, loved by hippies and definitly my lifestyle has been greatly influenced by these hippies..at times i wear a suite to work and shower more often, other times i put on a flowy skirt, get rid of the panties, not take a shower til i can't stand it, go barefoot everywhere and barter for things i need...i am a diffrent generation of hippie..we are a diffrent generation of hippie..times change, issues are dealt with diffrently, consequences are not the same today as in the past, as humans we are continueously evolving, as a society we are always changing, learning new things that can change our views and influence our actions..everything evolves even us hippies
where is it written that to be a hippie you had to live life in the 60's and 70's..if you have any backgroud in history you will know that hippies go way back..couldn't you say Jesus was a hippie? (i'm sorry if this offends anyone it's not meant to) he didnt' conform to social norms, didn't believe in war, wandered the earth by foot, bartered for services, and believed in the overall good of man...you don't think there were people during WW1 and WW2 that protested and rallied for peace? why assume hippies only rallied for peace during Vietnam..
being a hippie is a way that you life your life, your beliefs and convictions..i'd say a hippie is anyone who discougages violence and prejedism...who shares with others and lets go of selfishness...and it's about teaching the next generation about those values so we can continue being free-spirits for generations to come..if we aren't considered hippies then who is responsible for carring on the beliefs and convictions of those befor us..when the last flower child of the 70's is gone then are the hippies extint?
all in all the lable of "hippie" is just that, a lable...call your self whatever you want as long as you are kind to others, non-violent, and believe in flower power, thats all that matters...Free Your Mind

Some people change for the times.. some people change for themself.. some people Love what is True. Does this answer your question? No. It does, however, give you a little insight.

first you have to give your definition of hippie.
I am kind and listen to jam music, wear hippie clothing and what not. I am not a vegan or vegetarian. I am not an activist or political at all.
I hope that when I am 60 I will be the same way. I think when we look at our parents and ask if it lasted or not no most parents are not still hippies. Back when my parents were kids everyone was a hippie or at least it was a much more popular thing to do back in the 60s and 70s. In high schools now kids are 'gangster' or metro or whatever because it is the thing to do, well back in the 60s being a hippie in highschool was the thing to do. I think I will still be a hippie when im 60 because I choose to be a hippie and I would say now its pretty underground to be a hippie. People reading this are hippies now by choice so it will last for us.

I think I've always been a hippy, before I even knew what it was. I've always had a real connection to the trees. I always wanted to be someone that went to festivals and barter fairs. Then when I got older, and out of my parents grasp. I started to learn more and more about politics. activism and protests. That's when I felt like I had become a "hippie".
In highschool, I dreamed of one day having access to hemp clothing, and going to outside concerts. I wore bellbottoms and all that flower power stuff. But now, I think its more than threads. Its what you eat and what you try to do in your surroundings.

I lived life when I got old enough as society would now see it. I was raised by a mom & dad of the 50's-70's, who taught us children that we could live life as we saw fit within limits. Although limits are broken at times. I think it took me having my children to realize that I didn't like the way that I was being conformed by today's society. I may still eat meats, but always free range. Any fruits or veggies are either organic or home grown. And besides using few of the technologies of this day and age, I don't think that I over do it. I think that everyone's definition of Hippie is going to be different. But if we all believe in the same causes, then why shouldn't we be able to be one? I don't agree with stereotypes, but they are out there and have been for too many years. I love being as natural as I can. I'm even ready to buy or build a cottage out in the country side just to get away from the hustle and bustle of the every day business of the city.
I wouldn't let what others say to you bother you, believe what you think is right. And in that, we should all be happy.

I've lived some version of my current way of life for 15 years....although it is always evolving as I learn more about myself, the world, and those around me. I have two children, and instead of hiding who I am because of that, I am teaching them what I know with how we live within our family.

I agree that I also teach my children that who I am is not something to be ashamed of. Just because I don't agree with a lot of things that happen today or the next, I won't let them change who I am. My children are very open, and I'm glad to help shape them into the people they will become.
