We've all been there, at some point in time a magazine says "the check is in the mail" with absolutely no intention of actually mailing you anything. In order to help out all of our fellow freelancers, take a second to list any mags you've written for that have stiffed you for your work. Here are three that I'm still waiting for payment from:

RIME (been waiting nearly two years, I know it ain't comin)

Don Diva (even stiffed me on my byline!)

Fish N Grits (OK, honestly, I shouldn't be shocked by this one)

... make that a third for RIME ... and I know they're going through money troubles at the mo, so it will be a long while before anyone gets paid. (Sorry Maurice and Adam ... and another sorry to myself).

Also ... The Source ... but I guess that one was obvious.

Spotted at Bitter Vibes:

"How come I just called Jeremy Miller at The Source and some nigga named Mike answered his phone trying to be gangsta telling me not to call back again because the source "ain't got no money"? That nigga cursed me out! Asked me if I needed him to tell me in french and spanish that the source doesn't have any money! When I told the bitch to tell me in french he hung up.

I have been trying to get paid by those clowns for over a year. Jeremy Miller promised he would send me a check but that shit ain't happen yet. When I call his office he's got some punk named Mike cursing me out?"

And it goes on.

WOW... Publications put on blast. This is a good topic cause I get request all the time from all the mention magazines. One even tried to get an artist publicist to call me to get my to write a feature on her client. I called them and told them FUCK YOU PAY ME!!!

Rime Magazine.. I wrote a real nice Memphis Bleek feature for them back in 2003... you can actually peep it here (http://qsviews0.tripod.com/id15.html click on the pic). Last year, James Dunn asked me to write something else, I told him pay me first. He said he would pay me.... haven't heard from him since.

The Source, did a Microphone Check awhile back, but it never ran, but I was told I was going to get a kill fee for it, but never got it. the editor I was working with left anyway, so oh well.....

If you guys don't get it by now, stay away from RIME Magazine!

Wow, didn't realize there were so many hip-hop writers in the ATL area. What's up, y'all.

I've been pretty lucky with getting paid by mags. The only glossy that straight-up stiffed me was Unleashed. (I'm probably forgetting some names, though.) I even got money out of XLR8R! I didn't get a kill fee from the Source for an unpublished Arsonists review once, but I got paid for everything else.

Uncross your fingers before you get arthritis. Is it just me or did their last issue go on a slim fast diet? Unfortunately, they do not have the money they boast about makin' 5 years ago.

I guess I won't front on Rime, I never had a problem getting paid. I'll agree it wasn't always on time but it came nonetheless.
