A writing professor of mine used to say nearly everything was ripe for humor. To illustrate his point he would ask if anyone knew a good temperature for cooking fingers.

The other day while at BBV I ran across a Danish film called THE GREEN BUTCHERS (2003) on the new release shelf. The story of two friends whose business flounders until a bizarre accident leads one to concoct a new dish for their organic butcher shop reminded me of a string of horror/comedies from the 80's and early 90's about individuals feeding an unsuspecting public human flesh disguised as rare and unusual confections.

DELICATESSEN (1991)
PARENTS (1989)
CONSUMING PASSIONS (1988)
BLOOD DINER (1987)
EAT THE RICH (1987)
EATING RAOUL (1982)
MOTEL HELL (1980)

I guess my question is--what is it about cannibalism that makes it a staple of the horror/comedy genre?

I don't know, but it reminded me of the film "The Undertaker and His Pals" from 1967.

Sweeney Todd was played for laughs and horror in the Victorian theatre.

And now, you can see Sweeney Todd in the movie theaters soon. I'm looking forward to it. :)

for what ever reason, things taken to extremes can be funny to me. To a certain point anyway. If something is so completely over-the-top it can get me to laughing.
