I go to Madison High school, and Im a friend of Dickie's, and my friend Katie is a BIG friend of Dickie's, and like...hmmm...I have a gut feeling that Beside Me is sort of a stereotypical scene of emo music, I mean, It would help me to sleep at night to know if Dickie knew how, where and when emo music started.

Fall Out Boy, Underoath, Saosin, My Chemical Romance, Rocket Summer, Arthur, Dashboard Confessional, Saves The Day, Green Day......

Those are the "Sounds Like" of Beside Me.

The only things close to emo on that list are Saves The Day and Dashboard Confessional, which are post-emo indie.

Fallout Boy is pop rock.

Underoath is post-metalcore screamo/alternative.

Saosin is post-hardcore/alternative.

My Chemical Romance is basically....idk...poser goth idk. Pop punk. Yeah. Pop punk.

What Im trying to say is, I LOVE Beside Me, but I'd feel better knowing that this good music they play isnt a stereotypical, poser-lable band.

Do they know anything about the 1980's DC Emotionally Charged Hardcore Punk scene that started emo music?

In the early 80's, hardcore punk band called Rites Of Spring released a more mellow, introspective album that their fans started to lable "emocore", short for "emotionally charged hardcore punk", it then grew to the word "emo", which was a way to lable bands that started to follow Rites Of Spring's example and add a more emotional, breakdown performance during their shows and in their later albums.

Other bands that are credited to bring the emo style of punk into a wider audience are Sunny Day Real Estate, Texas Is The Reason, Jawbreaker, Braid, Mineral, etc.

The only real recent emo bands that come from real emo roots are Jimmy Eat World (first album), The Get-Up Kids, Phantom Planet, At The Drive-In, Weezer (first album) etc.

The next tangeant of emo (or the closest thing, fans just lable them emo for having a sad, sensitive, and/or emotional vibe) is post-emo indie rock. These are bands like Dashboard Confessional, Saves The Day, Say Anything, and The Scene Aesthetic.

Bands that draw different types of music into their band, including emo, are bands like Senses Fail and Silverstein. According to critics (and fans, believe it or not), these bands are using the lable "emo" to draw a wider variety of fans. The only thing these bands have lose to "emo" in their music are their stereotypical emo lyrics about broken hearts, bleeding hearts, or anything to do with hearts.

My Chemical Romance and The Used have also been known to be labled as "emo", whether indirectly labling themselves by putting on makeup to cause fans to lable them emo is correct or not, they are not emo.

Sorry for the rant, it just gets on my nerves when the term emo is used for stuff that isnt real emo, but a mere over-exaggerated, stereotpyed perversion of emotionally charged hardcore punk rock from the 1980's Washington DC Scene.

Im not saying Beside Me are like that, Im just saying, you know, to fans, wake up and smell the m&m's, learn the music you listen to, it may not be what it seems.

So I would like to ask;

Is Beside Me under the impression that they are flat-out emo, poser-emo (that I mentioned above), or indie-emo.

If I had to lable it anything, it would be Acoustic/Indie/Emo.

Just saying.

Sorry if I pissed off any of you people.

why am I an idiot scott?

for having an opinion?

dont remember, when you argue on the net, you're no more intelligent than a kid in the special olympics.

I like Beside Me alot, I just get confused because I was introduced to emo in the late 80's, my older brother was into the 80's DC Scene, and I grew up listening to original emo.

Its just strange seeing it like this these days, you know?

its something you need to understand first before you judge, but you arent that kind of person, so nvm.

Every One has the right to there opinions. And I dont think he is an Idiot. He just asked a simple question. And explaind the reasons behind him asking.

For me. I try not to label any one. But it is hard. I could not tell you the roots of emo or the roots of techno ect.... Its ashamed people feel they have to put everything into a net little labled pile. Because ever one has a different taste and sound. Even from song to song.

But I do like your discription of them.

By the way thanks for joining the group!

There are to many labels. If you love the music then it shouldn't matter what they sound like or what type of music they play or even if they know the roots, if anything it's just love for the music. nothing more and nothing less and to label is the corporate worlds way of putting things into groups.
