Hey everyone, I am working towards my degree in IT and I have gotten into IT 210 Fundamentals of Programming with Algorithm and Logic...I have to say I am completely lost in this class and have no clue about programming. Ask me to remove a virus, fine....Ask me to program a module, that’s another story. Can someone please give me some pointers on what to do???

Awww, don’t tell me you’re lost in this class!?!? This is my next class up in three weeks and this is all I need to hear. :)
But, isn’t algorithm just and effective method in trying to figure out a solution to a problem? For example, say you have a lamp that doesn’t work. Your first step is to determine if the lamp is plugged in. If the answer is no, then plug the lamp in. If the answer is yes, then you need to determine if the bulb is blown out. If the answer is yes, then replace the bulb. If the answer is no, then you need to buy a new lamp. (Funny, I just solved this problem last night with a lamp, but the bulb was blown).
I’m really pretty good at solving complex problems, expecially when it comes to these classes where the syllabus or required readings don’t give you very much information to go on, and all the instructor does is repeat what the syllabus just stated when you ask him or her a question. Other than this, I can’t help you right now. Maybe if you have a friend who is a programmer or possibly talking to a co-worker from your job who specializes in programming, maybe he or she could help you understand what to do.

I am also in IT 210 and struggling with this class. I am very competent in all other classes, but this one is giving me grief. I am going to head up to a campus location and see if i can get pointed in the right direction. Help is free at the nearest campus ....call for a schedule...because they had me come up last Thurs. and the instructor was not an IT person. Good Luck...

I got an A in that class but it was pretty difficult.

Well, I hope I do as well as you and get an A, since I start the class next week. I’ve been doing pretty good at acing A’s out of very difficult classes or classes I hate. If I can get an A out of Statistics, then I think I can get an A out of this class and Java Programming when I take it next year.

Yeah Java Programming was the same. I got an A but it was very hard. That class is the harder of the two, at least for me it was.
I have to take Statistics 2 classes from now. Not looking forward to it.

Well, I thought Statistics was going to be hard, and I even had a tutor (co-worker) lined up just in case I needed help. But, I aced the class without a tutor.
It wasn’t as hard as I thought or as other people before me have taken it and said how hard it was. I have heard horror stories over Fininte Math and decided I didn’t want to take that at all and would just suffer thru Statistics.
As long as you work the example problems in each section, and purchase a Statistics Calculator (Texas Instruments TI83 Plus or TI84 Plus) to use when working the problems, you’ll be alright. It also helps when you have people on your Learning Team who are grasping the work and can help out also. My instructor gave us a lot of information on how to solve some of the problems, but I never used any of it because when he posted it, he never included the title of the thread and I just thought he was just replying to another student’s thread.

That is why I decided to take it. I have heard horror stories on Finite Math and figured Statistics had to be easier.

I think Statistics is much easier. There is a thread in this forum where a student was complaining about her Finite Math class. I haven’t heard from her in a while, so I hope she survived it.

I am in this class now and I have to agree with the original poster now. This class is NO JOKE! Heck, I’m pretty good at figuring things out, but this is REDICULOUS! This is the end of my first week in the class and half my class is lost! The instructor was yelling at everyone with the first two DQs because everyone was responding from a business perspective and not from a developer’s perspective. How the heck were we supposed to know this when he didn’t define it at the beginning of the class?
The instructor is pretty much holding conversations with only those students who have a knowledge of programming and all the aconyms they are using is like Chinese! He is not explaining anything to anyone and forcing people to THINK like a programmer, although the course said "students will be provided with a basic understanding of programming development practices." This class is speaking in advanced techno jargon!
Now I am starting to think maybe I should just change my major because my instructor has thrown us all out in the water without a life jacket and told us to pretty much start learning to swim. I’d probably do better on my own learning programming compared to what I’m receiving in this class. And that’s pretty much what I’m going to have to do because the instructor is not of any help.
Then, I think everyone he put on my Learning Team has pretty much dropped out the course after the way he was going off on everyone with their responses to the first week of DQs, but who can blame them? His approach to it was way off from a professional aspect.
