Just a place to introduce yourself....

Myname is Jana, and I'm from S. Florida, but currently living in midtown KC. I do figurative oil painting based off of psychological states such as dissociation, anxiety, and based off of poems and readings that have resonated with me (TS Eliot. Passages from Franz Kafka, etc.)

I mortgaged my soul to graduate from the KC Art Institute a few years back. Occasionally I show the the Late Show gallery on 16th and Cherry. Sometimes at Starbucks in Westport.

I also like to think I'm a writer. You know, workin on that bestselling novel that will pay back all of my student loans.

I'm Jen Horstman, currently a pre-school teacher, kind of fell into that gig. Originally from Iowa now I'm living in KC. College in Kirksville, MO with an art degree emphasis on Sculpture and Graphic Design. I'll have to admit my graphic designs skills are a bit rusty since I haven't had a computer with updated graphics software for about 3 years.

My style is yet to be determined. I have experience in most everything art, except ceramics unless you count 7th grade art. And my thirst is quenched with tormented figures and visual puns. Right now, my projects include small wire sculptures with fiber adornments as well as ink wash illustrations.

The focus right now is finishing at least 20 tiny sculptures and 10 medium sized illustrations all fitting together in, if nothing else, style. In the same breath I hope to find a writer who is willing to let me illustrate a children's book or otherwise. I used to illustrate for Vox Magazine when I lived in Columbia, it was pro bono, but I guess I can now say that I've been published at least 20 times.

I hope that members on this site would like to meet in person. That would be more than fabulous. I need a fire lit under my ass.

  • Who are you and where are you from?
    >>>> I live in KC but was born in Israel. My name is Nathan and I started this group.

  • What is your art style?
    >>>> Right now, I am not really doing much, sadly. I do stay very involved in the art community. From the KC IFC to the Belger Foundation, to attending the Art Crawl on a regular basis. I go to a lot of film events and other art events. As for my own work, I do photography and virtual tours for a living. My backgroud is in painting, drawing and ceramic. I had a huge wall piece in a show last summer. I worked on it for about a year and it was nice to get to show it in a gallery. I was hoping to do more in that route and you can see an image of it in my profile here on myspace. I also have a few other large paintings started. I have always loved doing figurative work, but have since taken a break and kinda stuck in abstact stuff lately. The wall piece combines digital, conceptual, and photography.

  • How do your work, what is your choice of mediums?
    >>>> I work in anything from digital, to painting, to photography, to poetry, to music, to video, to film, ... whatever. Many times things just happen in the moment. I love to listen to music when I paint, and many times I just write or create digital art when I get inspired. Currently, I have been working too many hours and involved in too many volunteer commitments to have the time or energy to paint (which is very sad I know). I keep spiritual working to change that and get back into the arts.

  • Why do you do what you do, what art your inspirations?
    >>>> I always say this, I used to not like Andy Warhol, now after watching so many dumentaries on him, it is not about if I like him or not, because he inspires me to think in so many ways I never did before. Picaso, I thought was boring, until I went to school and learned about him and I understand his genius. Many times it is not about anything famous, but about what I see today. I love music, I love poetry. I dont believe you have to be an artist to create art. I think sometimes kids do the most interesting things. I also have to say I have been hugely inspired by some of the minimalist (definetly) like Ad Rienhardt.

  • When - Your schooling or background, and even short resume of events you participated in or will participate in.
    >>>> I went to KSU and got a degree in drawing and almost completed a second degree in ceramics. I won quite a few awards in my life while at school including a few schoolships. I was part of the an art group that did not last at the college. I also mention I have always been facinated with electronic music along with local music and have been part of both scenes for many years. I started one of the first techno radio shows in the midwest in the early 90's and even used to read poetry on air during those late years. Around 1997 I went back to school at JCCC and studied Web Media and Programming which spawed a old love in computers, video, and digital work on many levels. I am also a member of the KC IFC (film group) www.ifckc.org for over 4 years now.

  • Where - Contact info (optional) including website, or link to photos of your work, galleries or events you participate in.
    >>>> My website is currently down and I have not had the time or energy to update it for almost a year. Someday I will. It is www.conceptinfinity.com. You can email me at myspace or check out my profile if you want to IM me on Yahoo.

  • Misc - Events you are involved with, favorite artists, galleries or events you attend.
    >>>> I do about anything and everything. My favorite thing to do is the First Friday Art Crawl. I also voluneer at the Belger Arts Foundation Regularly along with the Dino Lab at Scince City. For the past 4 years I have also helped at the Kansas City Jubilee. I love to stay involved in many things. My favorite art show each year is the plaza art fair. I love the ballet, and I still always love live music. Whatever, whenever (if I can find the time). I try to AVOID fetish art and I dont believe you have to shock people to make art intertering or important. However, that is not to say, you cannot shock people with good intentions or good taste. My favorite kind or art is minimalism or conceptual art.

Hello, my name is Martin Harris, i live in Raytown but was raised in Blue springs. I don't really have much of an art style, I just get something in my head and the only way to get it out is to produce it. Doesn't matter if it's an image, story, sculpture or even music. If it doesn't get out it just festers and grows like a cancer.
most of what i do now is drawing, sketches and notes for projects and the occasional concentated work. i used to do a lot of oil and ceramics, but with four small kids, having oil paint and clay and such around the house is well, not advised.
I try to draw from and study as many artistic styles as i can but i am partial to pop art and impressionism, i also draw from political cartoons.
i studied art and photography at CMSU but did not graduate and haven't pursued any formal training since then.

Arts in Prison, Inc. is a nonprofit in KCK that provides personal growth through the arts for inmates volunteers and community to motivate and inspire positive change.
We provide fine arts instruction in correctional facilities and juvenile detention centers. It is an excellent residency opportunity. Many artists in the KC Metro and Lawrence area have used an AiP residency in fulfillment for undergraduate and graduate studies. Arts in Prison also has provided motivated volunteers with placement in facilities to share their art and passion for creating art with the incarcerated.
When artists complete their residency we sponsor an exhibit of their work they produced with the inmates as well as their own work. We have an exhibit at the Coffee Girls in June from a class done inside a juvenile detention center.
check out my profile and www.artsinprison.org.
we are working on revamping our website!

Motivate and Inspire positive change!

Thanks,
Heidi
