Just another design idea to throw out there, towards a future "master/quest" mode. Granted, the song selection method can be used by any of the past versions... a choice between 2-3 songs, a small grouping to choose between ala SMM... or you could even integrate such a mode into the freeplay/select used in normal Arcade/Game mode.
Basically, the "Olympic" portion of the mode is not to force players to play with selected modifers necessarily - clearing songs/stages will still count - but to encourage/reward them for trying some combinations thereof; based on a Bronze/Silver/Gold/Platinum set of supplimental goals for the stage.
For instance 1:
Bronze: B or better a song on 3x
Silver: A or better a song on 3x
Gold: AA or better a song on 3x
Plat’m: AAA a song on 3x
The idea here, is that the Bronze goals are totally attainable, and the Gold/Platinum goals are expert-oriented and very difficult to achieve; with silvers falling in the "good, you’re getting there" range.
For instance 2:
Bronze: Full Combo the song.
Silver: Full Combo the song on 1.5x, REVERSE.
Gold: Full Combo the song on 1x, FLAT.
Platinum: Full Perfect the song on 3x, REVERSE, DARK.
For instance 3:
Bronze: Score a 15 COMBO on 3x or higher.
Silver: Score a 30 COMBO on 5x or higher.
Gold: Score a 100 COMBO on 3x or higher.
Platinum: Score a 150 COMBO on 5x or higher.
Playing on 3x can fulfill the Bronze/Gold qualifications, but to get Platinum, you’d have to play 5x or higher. Fulfilling the combo conditions on 5x, however, will qualify for any of the goals.
This is also a system that can work with open difficulty-select; so if players want to jump in with EXPERT charts, or go through the whole thing with LIGHT, it’s totally possible. So not only is it approachable, but it’s also pro-friendly as well. ;)
What do you think about this?
