Going paperless may seem like a good idea but it might make the economy worse! The post office is already considering dropping to a 5 day work week rather than a 6 day because of the decrease in mail. The usps employs more than 700,000 people. If everyone decides to go paperless, they’d better start making more can food donations because all those people will be jobless!!!!

Troy makes a good point. We can keep on using paper if we recycle it, rather than cutting down new trees.

Then you’re forcing millions in the timber and lumber industry out of work

Everything is delicately connected full circle.

I always try to reuse paper if I can.

Very true. Unfortunately, our economy is so unstable right now that anything we do, even if it’s in good graces such as this, it’s going to hurt someone.

I believe that the same claim to keep an industry afloat was given by the ice cutters/delivery people back in the 1930’s. They stated that they should receive government help to sustain their business because a new competitor had an unfair advantage and they could not compete. That new competitor was the refrigerator, so when new technology makes an old technology obsolete we should not hold on to the old technology hoping that somehow we are helping the economy or the environment . Personally I have asked for paperless because it saves paper that I would have otherwise thrown away, and it helps protect my identity. Also, we should understand how paper recycling affects our environment as well... there are some very nasty chemicals that are used to bleach paper in that process.
